Whats coming down the pipe

by Reuben Tozman on September 30, 2011

I had a great discussion with Aaron Silvers from the ADL the other day. The discussion left me feeling hope that there are mainstream institutions pushing the boundaries. Maybe its the ADL’s job to do that (push boundaries), but admittedly I was always disappointed in their non willingness to put a stake in the ground for instructional design. They created a technology specification which had some impact on instructional design but (with reasons I understand) left out trying to dictate best practice instructional design.

Not that the ADL is going to do that (I’m not in the know) in the future, they are taking a stab at redefining how learning can be structured in a way that is consistent with the evolution of web technology. Here’s the part where I get to whats coming down the pipe….The evolution of web technology is an intelligent web. A web that can read and understand itself. The primary benefit of having a web that can understand itself, is the ability to put the web to work for you in delivering content that is specific for you. Right now, we ask the web to find us x, y and z. We prepare packages of content that play out on the web. Each package of content at this point is most likely a duplication of content simply packaged differently for someone else, somewhere different.

The web will take over packaging content for you, because it will know who you are or the organization you work for. How does this affect design? It means we can stop being the construction worker and we can be the designer – the way it was meant to be. Stop worrying about the delivery, focus more on structure.

That is a great big issue that might never be resolved. Everybody wants “cheap” training, built by SME’s, not ISD’s. But I have been somewhat impressed with ADL lately. They seem to be taking a whole new look at things. I am not sure where they will land in all of the changes, but I like their attempt to be forward thinking.
